hooper – super duper

private album stream:

Hooper is the creative project of Montreal-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Shane Hooper. Known for his drumming and songwriting contributions with Canadian indie-rock band PACKS, he now steps forward with Hooper as his primary outlet – crafting music that bridges eras and genres, balancing melody and grit, nostalgia and experimentation.

Born and raised on a small island off Canada’s west coast, Shane Hooper grew up surrounded by music. His father played in the platinum-selling band The Grapes of Wrath, and his mother was one half of the beloved indie-folk duo Lava Hay. That early immersion shaped Hooper’s lifelong relationship with songwriting.  When he was still in high school, his raw talent had already carried him to the CBC Searchlight Finals, marking him as a young artist to watch.

Now based in Montréal, Hooper brings his uncanny songwriting skills to his debut full-length album. Drawing on the melodic storytelling of the ’60s singer-songwriters and filtering it through a gritty, imperfect ’90s lens, the songs feel almost familiar and have a resonance that stays with you.

Recorded mostly live off the floor at Mixart Studios, a veritable time capsule of the ’60s-’70s era, the album captures the essence of Montréal’s vibrant art scene. Surrounded by a circle of like-minded musicians, Super Duper channels the energy of a city where authenticity still carries the day.

His melodies create a nostalgia for the past (even one you never lived) and a quiet longing for what’s still ahead. From the edgier tracks to softer, ballad-like moments there is a recurring theme: the search for a place, and a time, to finally call home.

The indie music scene in Montreal is alive and well, and delivering the kind of music we still long for.
